What is Breaking Chains?

Breaking Chains is a community initiative created by KCK (Kindness. Courage. Knowledge.) that helps remove financial barriers preventing children from participating in activities that encourage confidence, resilience, creativity, discipline, teamwork, and personal growth.

Why is it called "Breaking Chains?"

Every child faces obstacles. Sometimes those obstacles are financial.

Breaking Chains exists to remove one barrier at a time so children can pursue opportunities that may shape their future.

Every opportunity represents one chain broken.

What is a Chain Breaker?

A Chain Breaker is a child selected through the Breaking Chains program who receives an opportunity made possible through the generosity of a community partner.

We believe the opportunity opens the door but the child chooses to walk through it.

Who runs Breaking Chains?

Breaking Chains is a program of KCK (Kindness. Courage. Knowledge.), founded by KayCee Karrar-Main.

KCK coordinates partnerships, applications, communication, and program administration.

​

Who can apply?

Current eligibility: Children ages 3 through 17 living in West Michigan.

Future expansion may occur as the program grows.

What kinds of opportunities are available?

Examples include, but are not limited to:

Dance

Sports

Music

Art

Theater

STEM & Robotics

Scouting

Summer camps

Educational enrichment

Equipment and uniforms

Other opportunities that encourage healthy personal growth.

Is there an income requirement?

Currently, Breaking Chains does not use a strict income threshold.

Applications are reviewed holistically to understand how an opportunity could positively impact a child's life while considering financial barriers.

Can I apply more than once?

Yes! Maybe there is more than one passion in your soul. We ask only that you limit the application to one per opportunity each calendar year. Exception may be considered.

Will every applicant receive an opportunity?

No. While we wish we could help every family, opportunities depend on available community partnerships and program resources.

Every application is reviewed thoughtfully and respectfully.

Will applying affect my privacy?

No. Personal information is kept confidential.

Stories, names, or photographs are only shared with the permission of a parent or guardian.

​

Is there a cost to apply?

No. Applying to Breaking Chains is completely free.

​

Who can become a Breaking Chains Partner?

Businesses, organizations, community groups, and individuals who want to help create opportunities for children are encouraged to partner with Breaking Chains.

Scholarships

Registrations

Equipment

Uniforms

Lessons

Memberships

Supplies

Camp tuition

Or another meaningful opportunity.

Do we personally choose the child?

No. KCK manages the application and selection process using established program guidelines.

This helps ensure fairness, privacy, and consistency.

Will we know where our partnership went?

Yes. Each partner receives a Chain Broken impact update summarizing the opportunity created through their partnership.

Personal information is shared only with appropriate parent or guardian permission.

​

Can we remain anonymous?

Yes. Businesses and individuals may choose to remain anonymous.

​

What is Program Support?

Program Support helps KCK coordinate and sustain the Breaking Chains initiative.

It may include partnership development, application management, communication, website maintenance, printed materials, outreach, program coordination, recognition, and other administrative resources necessary to responsibly operate the program.

Program Support is always discussed before a partnership is finalized.

How are Chain Breakers selected?

Applications are reviewed using established program guidelines with the goal of creating the greatest positive impact while ensuring fairness, transparency, and responsible stewardship of community partnerships.

Can someone nominate a child?

Current intention: Parents and guardians may apply directly.

Nominations may also be accepted from:

Teachers

Coaches

Counselors

Community organizations

Community partners

What happens after someone is selected?

Families receive a Welcome, Chain Breaker! packet outlining the next steps, expectations, and available resources.

KCK coordinates the opportunity with the community partner.

​

Can opportunities be renewed?

Renewal requires a new application every year or season.

​

Can I make a financial contribution?

Yes. Individuals and organizations may support Breaking Chains through partnerships or other approved methods that help create opportunities for children and sustain the program.

How can I help if I don't own a business?

There are many ways to support Breaking Chains:

Volunteer your time.

Share the mission.

Connect us with potential partners.

Donate supplies.

Sponsor an opportunity.

Encourage a child.
